To the untrained eye, it appears as if they're just sitting poolside catching some rays and working on their tans.

In their basic uniform of red swimsuit, baseball cap, whistle around the neck, sunblock on the nose and the obligatory sunglasses, it seems as though they're being paid for hanging by the pool.

Not so.

The fact is, lifeguards are much busier than they look. Participating in training sessions, performing simulated rescues, and giving swim lessons all augment a lifeguard's basic job.

Even the lifeguarding itself is more active than it appears. They're constantly monitoring the hordes -- some of the larger water parks in the South Suburbs can accommodate as many as 1,500 guests -- of swimmers in ways that may not be obvious.
